Health is Your True Wealth

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda means the science or knowledge (veda) of life (ayu). It is a holistic system of medicine, originating in India thousands of years ago. It aims to promote optimum health and well-being for the individual bringing them back into their natural balance.

We all have our own unique constitution of the different elements. Ayurveda's aim is to bring these back into their innate equilibrium – an equilibrium where there is ease in mind, body and soul. Diet, lifestyle, age, stress and other environmental factors can cause imbalance(s) which can often manifest as dis-ease – or, as we know it, disease - in the body. Ayurveda looks for and treats the root cause of disorders, if the root cause is not identified then only the symptoms can be treated and the origins of the disorder and the disorder itself remain masked. Ayurveda uses dietary and lifestyle advice along with ayurvedic herbs to bring the individual back into natural balance, not only in body but in mind and spirit – this allows us to live as our true selves with greater awareness and consciousness.

Why ‘Alma’?

Alma, with its Latin roots, means soul in many languages. It also means nourishing, kind and providing nurture. In my practice, this idea of soul or one's true self is the focus. The consultations are for you and about you. From one soul to another – Alma Ayurveda.

Consultation

The initial consultation lasts approximately 90 minutes in which we will discuss your current state of health, medical history, diet, lifestyle, relationships, digestion, excretion and menstruation, along with pulse and tongue examination.

A prime focus will be on agni or digestive power, this is the body's ‘powerhouse’ and focal point just as the fireplace is the heart of a home. In Ayurveda, agni or digestive fire is a fundamental aspect of wellbeing; balanced agni leads to good nourishment of the bodily tissues and good elimination. We will focus on your appetite, digestion and excretion in order to bring balance into the body and provide it with the nourishment it needs to thrive.

After the consultation you will be provided with personalised dietary and lifestyle advice, and ayurvedic herbal formulations.

Follow-up consultations are scheduled after 2-6 weeks. You will be able to contact me after and between consultations if you have any queries or need additional information and support.

By continuing to apply the ayurvedic principles, you will find that you become more attuned to your body’s signals and needs, and will have the tools to respond effectively when imbalances occur and your wellbeing is affected.

What can Ayurveda do for me?

Modern life brings with it many stressors that can bear weight on the wellbeing of our mind, body and spirit; this may be stress from work, family issues, improper diet and lifestyle choices among many, many others. Ayurveda looks for and treats the root cause of disorders, if the root cause is not identified then only the symptoms can be treated and the origins of the disorder remain masked.

The patient as a whole is considered through this holistic science, and individualised consultations allow for a focused exploration of the patient’s concerns and needs. Common issues that patients come with for treatment are:

  • Low energy
  • Digestive disorders
  • Skin conditions
  • Joint pain and conditions – including arthritis and gout
  • Women's Health - including pre-menopause and menopause
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Issues with sleep
  • Respiratory disorders including asthma

Everybody is unique and will have their own journey with Ayurveda. The consultation is based around you, so dietary and lifestyle plans will be formulated to fit with you and your life. Our aim is to nurture ourselves back into our own balance and state of wellbeing.

Testimonials

Gemma

I went to see Kim at Alma Ayurveda because of ongoing, disruptive digestive issues and fatigue.

I thought my lifestyle was healthy; an active job, frequent exercise and eating what would usually be considered a very healthy, balanced diet.

But something was causing me to feel unwell. I had tried cutting out certain foods and had started to conclude that most foods caused problems. I had visited my doctor several times over the previous months and had had several tests, but they could find nothing wrong.

That's when I went to see Kim. Kim's warmth and deeply caring nature have made my visits with Alma Ayurveda such a beautiful and comforting experience.

Kim was able to gently show me different ways of giving my body the care and nourishment it needs.

She gave me a completely different way of looking at the food I was eating and helped me understand how my body type would use and react to different ingredients and different methods of food preparation.

Kim prescribed various herbs and supplements to aid in the rebalancing phase of the treatment along with recipe ideas to get me started on my journey and also encouraged to think about my diet as just part of a package of care I should be giving myself, allowing my body and mind to recuperate and rebalance.

With follow up consultations to check on progress and any ongoing issues, Kim was able to tweak herbs and advice to ensure my wellbeing was continuing to improve.

Six months later and my mindset about nourishing my body has completely changed; I have found a new way of caring for myself as a whole and developed a foundation for lifelong self-compassion. Thank you, Kim. x

Testimonial

After many years of suffering with persistent digestive problems such as acid reflux, stomach cramps, bloating and IBS, I sought alternative advice.

After my initial consultation some recommendations were presented which included some Ayurvedic herbs to be taken at various times of the day, dietary recommendations and lifestyle changes.

Within a short period of time, I began to notice an improvement and subsequently the prescribed herbs were reduced or modified after a follow up consultation.

I have now again had my prescribed herbs reduced as my problems are under control. In all honesty, I was initially sceptical but after following the advice and treatments offered, I have to admit that it did work for me!

Testimonial

I had symptoms of IBS for many years including bloating, gas and night time discomfort with disturbed sleep.

I recently began an Ayurvedic course of prescribed herbs, relaxation and lifestyle changes. After adhering to this for several weeks the symptoms have settled down. I no longer have disturbed sleep. The most helpful lifestyle change was to eat the main meal of the day at lunchtime.

It has been wonderful to have control of my problems, after all this time, with a totally natural therapy.
